What to pack when traveling with your cat
Most cats prefer their territory, so traveling with them requires a little planning. Starting early and bringing the right things turns a stressful day into a manageable one. This is what you need to prepare and when.
3–4 weeks before
- Check the rules. Airlines and countries have their own requirements for vaccinations, health certificates, and carrier size. Check them soon, because some documents take time.
- Make an appointment with the vet if you need a certificate or if your cat gets very stressed on trips. They will advise you on what is right for them.
- Make the carrier familiar to them. Leave it open at home with a soft blanket and some treats inside so it becomes another place to rest.
The week before
Practice short car rides with the carrier. Check that the microchip information is up to date and that the tag has your phone number. Print copies of important documents and save photos on your phone.
The packing list
- A secure, ventilated carrier with a pad and a familiar blanket.
- Their usual food (and a little extra), water, and collapsible bowls.
- A small or disposable litter box, litter, and a scoop.
- Any medication they take, with written instructions.
- Documents: vaccination record, health certificate if needed, vet contact information, and a recent photo.
- Wipes, bags, paper towels, and a spare pad.
- Their favorite toy and something that smells like home.
The day of the trip
Offer them a lighter meal a few hours before leaving, secure the carrier with the seat belt, and never leave them alone in a parked car. Speak to them calmly, cover part of the carrier with a light towel if that makes them calmer, and only open it in a closed room.
Upon arrival
Prepare a quiet room with a litter box, water, food, and the carrier before letting them explore. Give them a day or two to adapt before expecting them to behave normally.
